What a Long Strange Trip It's Been
At 4:37 PM we headed out on what has become our annual Easter sojourn to Rochester. This instance has the added bonus of taking the baby on her first road trip. She started out a little fussy but with the roar of the Honda, the hum of the road, and the beauty of Bach she quieted down for the first two-plus hours, and didn't really awake until we were well into New York.

We opted to stop for a quick urination and that's when the chaos broke loose. Hannah went first while I watched and hoped that our munchkin would stay asleep. Without the sound of the road she needed more corporial comfort.

We wanted to try to avoid stopping for a baby feeding. To that end Hannah sat in the back and gave her a bottle. The baby was rather confused by this. I guess it was a case of nipple confusion. We also found that it is very sporting trying to burp a baby in a car seat. After a time she had had enough of the faux nipple from real mommy and would not take it no more.

It was then that Hannah decided to breast feed the baby in the car. Knowing how unsafe it would be to remove Julie from her contour couch, she removed herself from her belt and cantalevered herself over the baby, dangling her nipple in Julie's face. While confused by this strange behavior the baby took the nipple and was happy.

Meanwhile, outside the car it was the dark of night. This means that everyone that we passed and everyone that passed us shined their headlights upon my wife's headlights dangling in the baby's face. It must have been very amusing for them. It was for me. Anyway the nipple did the trick, it usually does, and Julie was off to Nappy Land while we continued on to Chuck and Rachel Land.

We arrived at around 9:15 PM. The baby was happy and well if a bit stiff from five hours of being strapped in. After a period of stretching Julie was ready and eager to visit with Uncle Chuck, Aunt Rachel, and cousins Paige and Ethan.
