Decent Proposal
3:30 AM does indeed come awfully early. I got up as Hannah was going down. While on the way to the station Chuck and I worked out the specifics of what we were going to do. During the 7:00 hour, prime time for the show, I would propose, and then we would go to commercial. During the commercial break we would call Hannah and get her reaction. This had me a bit concerned since Hannah was just going to bed at 4:00. Like she's really going to be back up at 7:00 AM. We covered this base by calling Rachel a little while beforehand and having her wake up Hannah and tell her that I was going to be on the radio.

I had planned to propose, but I hadn't really come up with what I was going to say. During the first couple of hours of the show I tossed a couple of ideas around in my head. About 1/2 an hour before the event I wrote down some keywords. Then the time came. Here is how it went down.

I thought it went very smoothly. Some woman even called the station. She heard the proposal, but had run into a store when we played Hannah's reaction. She wanted to know how it turned out. I was so proud; I created "compelling radio".

I felt like celebrating, so in a throw-caution-to-the-wind fashion we stopped at Karen's Booze Emporium (not it's real name; I can't remember it's real name). I wanted to pick up a bottle of Dom Perigion. Of course they have it under lock and key; it's $100 a bottle. The old man couldn't find the bubbly. Then he couldn't find the key. Then he had to verify that I knew how much it cost, and then he had to verify my age (as if teenagers come in and buy $100 bottles of champaign to get a cheap under-aged buzz). Finally, after a 1/2 hour of BS and 20 pissed off customers behind me in line, we walked out with a bottle in a case (ooh, fancy).

Anyway, as I said on the radio, the ring was on its way and was supposed to be there by 10:30. 11:00 came and went and there was still no sign of it. Everyone was pacing around the house, looking out the windows, cheering every time a FedEx truck came into the neighborhood, that kind of thing. Afternoon came and it was time to go to Paige's (my niece to be) dance recital. The ring had still not arrived, so Hannah and I decided to stay and wait for it. It was upsetting because we really wanted to go and Paige really wanted us to go. Anyway, 3:00 rolled around and the ring was still MIA.

Now, did I mention that the day my ring shipped, FedEx crashed one of their planes onto the runway at the airport in Memphis? Did I mention that that runway had to be closed for a couple of days to clean up? Do you happen to know that FedEx ships all of their overnight and 2nd day packages through their main sort facility in, you guessed it, Memphis? Lovely. 3:30 PM rolled around and I was getting very concerned because the ring had still not arrived. I called Blue Nile and they were very helpful. They actually called FedEx on my behalf to check on the shipment. They said that the package was on the truck and would be delivered that day. Good, because they don't deliver on the weekend and we're leaving Sunday morning. Finally it showed up. Hannah was sooo excited. I got on one knee and re-proposed as I put the ring on her finger. Hmmm, it didn't seem to fit. But how is that possible? I measured one of her rings. It turns out that I didn't look in her "ring" jewelry box. So what did I measure? Ahhh, of course, her mother's fourty-year-old pearl engagement ring. Great, so I have a ring that would fit her mother perfectly, but it was two sizes too small for Hannah. ARRGH! I can't win. Anyway, Hannah decided to wear it on her pinky for the time being. We sipped Dom and chortled in our joy.
